The 'Shader Input' nodes provides the specific sampling functionality used in Nodal Shading, providing values based on various scene related parameters. The resulting samples can be fed into texture channels to produce unique effects not possible with the Shader Tree alone. The shader 'Channel Modifiers' provide some additional functionality to control the colors in intuitive ways. These elements combined with the various Shader Tree items and the Channel Modifiers in a schematic graph provide a very powerful way to wield MODO's shading power.
